This surname originates from the Barony and Parish of Abercromby in Fife. William de Abercromby (spelled Haberchrumbie), and Johan de Abercromby of the County of Fife, paid homage to Edward I of England in 1296 and were rewarded with the title of the area.

Ancient Abercrombie

The lineage of the family passed to the house of Abercromby of Birkenbog in Banffshire in the early seventeenth century, spreading its geographical influence still further later in the 18th centruy when Sir Ralph Abercromby's (1734-1801) widow was created Baroness Abercromby of Aboukir (in Egypt) and Tullibody.
