This picture is of an African Star Military Medal, won by Scottish soldiers during the second world war. It was taken at the Cameronians Regimental Museum in Scotland.
The Africa Star was awarded for 1 or more days service in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943. The colours on the ribbon represent the yellow of the desert sand with the others representing the Army, Navy & Air Force.
The blue on the left is commonly shown as a light blue in most pictures of this medal, however on this ribbon it was a much darker shade of blue and it is not a trick of the light.
